A Thoughtful Gift of Education

Al Hollinger & Joan Rumsey

Al Hollinger is the kind of friend who would come for a visit every day.  And that is just what he did while his dear friend Joan Rumsey was living at Delta Hospital’s Mountain View Manor. His commitment to Joan is palpable in his loyalty and quiet deeds.

Joan spent the final years of her life with Al and the team of medical professionals at Delta Hospital’s residential care facility. What really struck a chord with Al was the dedication and personal care given to Joan from the hospital’s nurses. And this past fall, it made sense to Al to give a gift to the people who helped Joan when she needed it most. The excellent care she received while living there has meant even more to Al now that he, himself, calls Mountain View Manor home.

On November 13, 2012, Al donated $100,000 to nursing education at Delta Hospital and, in a quiet ceremony at the hospital, the Foundation honoured his legacy by naming the education fund after him and his late, dear friend – The Al Hollinger-Joan Rumsey Nursing Education Fund. This significant contribution will help ensure that education programs are available to the nursing staff at Delta Hospital by providing resources and training equipment on an annual basis so that their education can be translated into the best possible patient care.

Ongoing education for our nursing staff is vitally important in the care for everyone who walks through Delta Hospital’s doors. With equipment and technology constantly evolving and improving, the nursing staff at Delta Hospital must be kept up to date on best practices and techniques. Dan Schatt, Clinical Nurse Educator for Delta Hospital’s Emergency Department, explained the need for education and the impact of Al’s gift when he said, “Health care has drastically changed in the last 20 years, and Al’s gift will ensure that our nursing staff will have access to the best and most innovative education tools”.

Al’s great experience with Joan at Mountain View Manor and his quiet resolve for the best in health care at Delta Hospital is allowing our nurses to continue their life-saving work, making a difference in the lives of everyone in Delta.

In 2008, Al Hollinger also donated $300,000, through a legacy gift, and built “Forest for our Future”.
