Enhancing Patient Safety: The Impact of PPID Scanners at the Delta Hospital Campus of Care

This Medical Laboratory Week, we’re excited to showcase our PPID Scanners and shine a spotlight on our dedicated medical laboratory professionals lead by Laboratory Site Supervisor, Agnes Ravena, who work tirelessly behind the scenes to support patient care. At the Delta Hospital Campus of Care, strides in patient safety have been made through the implementation of the Positive Patient Identification (PPID) Scanner, a tool that is indispensable. “A PPID Scanner is a tool that can help improve patient safety at your hospital,” explains Agnes Ravena. “It brings positive patient identification, positive specimen collection, and specimen label printing to the bedside.”

In the not-so-distant past, the landscape of patient identification was distant from the streamlined efficiency of PPID technology. “The previous method was the traditional way,” Agnes recalls, “where labels are printed in the lab and patient identification is done manually by looking at the patient’s arm band to check the name, date of birth, and account number.” It was a method prone to human error, where the margin for mistakes could be significant. But with the introduction of PPID Scanners, the tables have turned. Patients and healthcare staff alike have embraced the newfound safety measures with open arms. “Patients appreciate the enhanced safety measures that PPID Scanners bring,” Agnes affirms. “By using barcode wristbands and responsive scanners, misidentifications are minimized. Patients understand that this significantly reduces the risk of testing mistakes and wrong procedures.”

Healthcare staff share the same sentiment throughout the hospital, where they recognize the importance of patient identification accuracy. “Staff members appreciate the ease of using barcode wristbands and scanners,” notes Agnes. “In summary, the introduction of PPID Scanners has been positively received by both patients and healthcare staff, contributing to safer, more efficient care.” The benefits of PPID technology extend far beyond convenience. They represent a shift in the way patient identification is approached, enhancing accuracy and reliability in ways traditional methods could only dream of. “PPID Scanners have significantly improved the accuracy and reliability of patient identification compared to traditional methods,” Agnes explains. “Reduced errors, speed and efficiency, positive patient experiences, enhanced security, and standardization are just some of the key advantages.”

And as these benefits ripple through the hospital’s workflow, the impact is substantial. “The introduction of PPID scanners in the workflow between the lab and other areas of the hospital has several significant benefits,” Agnes elaborates. “Enhanced patient safety and streamlined workflow are just the beginning, laying the groundwork for a future where patient care is not just efficient, but safe.” In the end, the PPID scanners have allowed the Delta Hospital Campus of Care to continue with our pursuit of patient safety and delivering quality care. These benefits and innovative tools serve as a testament to the hospital’s unwavering commitment to providing safe, efficient, and patient-centered healthcare services. Thank you to all medical laboratory professionals, you all play a crucial role in maintaining our health and well-being.
