Why the Beedie Long-Term Care Centre matters now more than ever >>

Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation recently upgraded the Emergency Department staff room at the Delta Hospital Campus of Care. In a department where every moment counts, having a space to step away and recharge is essential for staff wellbeing. Until recently, finding a place to truly pause was a daily challenge. The staff room, meant to be a break from the high pressure pace of emergency care, was struggling to keep up with the needs of the people who relied on it most.
Before the upgrades, the space was cramped and outdated. The kitchen area was difficult to use, with the wrong type of sink and limited storage. With only a bar sized fridge, there was nowhere to keep meals or nourishment for long shifts. Even the walls showed signs of wear, with patches and very little room for staff to store personal belongings. “Space and storage were our biggest challenges,” explained Clay Gillrie, Clinical Operations and Program Services Manager for Emergency. “It just was not set up to support the demands of our team.”
Recognizing the need for improvement, Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation stepped in with donor support. Today, the staff room feels like a completely new environment. Fresh renovations, increased storage, a full size fridge, and dedicated lockers have transformed the room into a space that finally matches the dedication and care of the people who use it. According to Clay, the impact has been immediate. “Staff are very happy with the space,” he shared. “The renovated environment has improved morale, giving everyone a comfortable area to relax during breaks.”
The feedback from staff has been overwhelmingly positive. In a department where stepping off site for a break is rarely possible, having a calm and functional place to rest makes an enormous difference. Whether it is storing food for long shifts, taking a quiet moment to breathe, or simply knowing their belongings are secure, the improved space now supports staff in ways it never could before.
“This room now fits into the day to day reality of working in emergency care,” Clay added. “It gives staff a much needed spot to recharge so they can return to their work grounded, refreshed, and ready to care for the next patient.”
The Emergency Department team now has more than a break room. They have a space that acknowledges their hard work, supports their wellbeing, and helps sustain them through some of the most demanding moments in health care.
