Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation (DHCH Foundation) is proud to support deserving Delta students pursuing post-secondary education. Each year, DHCH Foundation awards two $1,500 scholarships – Robert T. Reynolds Memorial Scholarship and DHCH Foundation Scholarship.
The Robert T. Reynolds Memorial Scholarship is awarded annually in recognition of Robert T. Reynolds’ exemplary service including their participation in extracurricular activities, community volunteerism and school activities. This year the recipient is Sydney Harland from Southpointe Academy.
Sydney was chosen because she exemplified extraordinary volunteerism. She was the Head of Student Council and was responsible for her school earning Platinum certification with EcoSchools Canada by reducing the carbon footprint and helping students improve mental health by interacting positively with nature. Sydney is also involved in theatre, both as a cast member and by helping younger members learn lines and choreography. She is on the Honour Roll with distinction. In the fall, she is going to UBC to study Commerce.
The Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation Scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving student pursuing post secondary education that has, through their actions, shown a caring and compassionate nature and actively serves the community. This year there was a tie between Alice Pu from South Delta Secondary and Vashna Gounder from North Delta Secondary.
Alice was chosen because she has extensive school and community service as well as for her academic accomplishments. She has received Outstanding Academic Achievement and Outstanding Service School Awards. Alice has volunteered with the Rotary, KinVillage, and has raised money for Earthquake Relief, Residential School Survivors, and UNICEF. She is also a member of the Air Cadets and mentors new cadets. Alice is heading to UBC to study Applied Animal Biology with the goal of becoming a Veterinarian.
Additionally, Vashna was chosen for her dedication to service and volunteerism. She participated in the Delta Youth Advisory Council, working to improve the high school experience for everyone, and is very active in North Delta’s Theatre Program. Vashna volunteers with the Delta Hospital Auxiliary, starting in Mountain View Manor and now also volunteers in Delta Hospital’s Emergency Department, directing and assisting patients to ensure their comfort and safety. Vashna is going to SFU to major in Biological Sciences with the aim of pursuing a career in healthcare.
“On behalf of the Foundation Board and Staff, I extend heartfelt congratulations to Alice, Sydney, and Vashna for being awarded these scholarships. We wish them immense success in their future endeavors,” says Lisa Hoglund, Executive Director of Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. “The exceptional caliber of students who applied truly impressed us, and we wish all our applicants the very best in their post-secondary academic pursuits.”
