Nitrous oxide is a greenhouse gas commonly used for health care purposes that has a global warming potential 265 times that of carbon dioxide thus contributing to climate change. It is also the most significant ozone-depleting substance.

Although clinical use of nitrous oxide has decreased over the past decade, the key concern is the piped-in system used in our hospitals and those around the world, which has been shown to before ever reaching a patient.

In February, Delta Hospital joined health care facilities around the world who have discontinued use of their piped-in nitrous oxide system. By doing so, the hospital will reduce emissions equivalent to approximately 145,000 litres of gasoline burned every year.

Delta Hospital Executive Director Cathy Wiebe notes that “as a site without maternity, Delta Hospital was no longer using nitrous oxide in clinical practice. As such, this was an opportunity to not only reduce our greenhouse gas emissions but also to become a more efficient facility by reducing maintenance costs and purchase of the gas.”

The Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation provided support for the costs of discontinuing the system. The foundation’s Executive Director Lisa Hoglund says “our Foundation is proud to support this vital initiative. Delta Hospital has made significant progress in reducing emissions and setting a benchmark for sustainable practices in health care. This project aligns with our commitment to foster a lasting, positive impact on health and well-being within our community.”

This work is part of wider efforts to support Fraser Health’s to environmental sustainability. Wiebe reflects that “Delta Hospital is proud to have led the way in becoming the first facility in Fraser Health to take this step and we look forward to supporting our Fraser Health partners as we reduce our emissions and waste from nitrous oxide”.
