Celebrating Nursing Leadership at Delta Hospital

This International Nursing Week, we’re proud to recognize how nurses not only provide exceptional care, but also transform health through leadership, mentorship, and lifelong learning. At Delta Hospital Campus of Care, one of those leaders is Allison Wood, Patient Care Coordinator and Clinical Nurse Educator for the Surgical Day Care and Endoscopy Units.
In this dual role, Allison helps oversee the day-to-day needs on the unit and ensures the nurses have the support they need to provide the best care possible in Surgical Day Care and Endoscopy. She has been a nurse for 26 years, with a diverse background that includes roles as an emergency room nurse, various nursing leadership roles, and most recently as a bedside nurse in Endoscopy at Delta Hospital. With a master’s degree in healthcare leadership and critical care experience, she saw her current position as a strong fit for her skills and was eager to take on the challenge.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Allison’s work is mentoring other nurses. She enjoys watching their confidence and clinical skills grow, knowing she played a part in their development. “This kind of leadership improves patient care by fostering teamwork, encouraging open communication, and helping nurses make safer, more informed decisions,” she says. Like many healthcare environments, Surgical Day Care and Endoscopy can be fast‑paced and demanding as teams work to care for as many patients as possible. Despite these challenges, Allison credits the compassionate and efficient staff for their ability to balance priorities and make quick decisions to keep things running smoothly.
Many people may be surprised to learn just how many directions a nursing career can take. Allison notes, “as nurses we are very fortunate that our careers can be anything we make them to be,” with a wide variety of specialties and areas of focus. She adds that the possibilities for ongoing education and development are endless, and that your next challenge, when you are ready for it, is always available. For herself, she is grateful she chose nursing for the flexibility it allowed while raising her three children in Delta.
On the toughest days, it’s her coworkers who help Allison push through. She feels fortunate to be part of the Delta Hospital team, where collaboration and shared purpose are central to providing high‑quality care. She also values the strong support from the community and foundation, and the pride the team takes in serving a hospital that does such meaningful work close to home.
This Nurses Week, we celebrate nurses like Allison, leaders, educators, and caregivers whose dedication demonstrates the power of nurses to transform health, today and for the future.
