Hawthorne Elementary’s Raises $3,320 to Bring Virtual Reality to Dementia Residents at Delta Hospital’s Long Term Care Facility
Each year, BC Youth Week is held during the first week of May. This province-wide celebration shines a spotlight on the incredible contributions of young people and strengthens the bond between youth and their communities. As we recognize this year’s Youth Week, we’re looking back with immense gratitude at a heartfelt initiative that took place last June, made possible by the students of Hawthorne Elementary and their dedicated teacher, Mrs. Erin McGill.
Hawthorne Elementary’s “Hawthorne Hikers” laced up for a 5K walk in support of the Delta Hospital Campus of Care. With Mrs. McGill leading the way, the event raised an outstanding $3,320! This generous gift helped fund Virtual Reality (VR) Goggles for dementia residents at Mountain View Manor, Delta Hospital’s long term care residence.
Their contribution is already making a meaningful difference. These VR goggles offer residents an immersive way to revisit special memories, explore new environments, and experience multisensory stimulation. For individuals living with dementia, this technology can reduce feelings of loneliness, provide moments of joy, and enhance overall wellbeing.
The Power of VR in Dementia Care
Virtual Reality (VR) uses advanced computer technology to create simulated, 3D worlds. Through special goggles (often paired with sound and touch sensations), users can experience a sense of presence in new places, from peaceful gardens to meaningful childhood locations.
Research shows that VR can boost memory, focus, and cognitive engagement. For dementia patients, this can lead to improved mood, fewer behavioral issues, and a greater sense of calm. It also allows users to relive cherished moments, triggering positive emotions and strengthening their connection to the world around them.
Thanks to the kindness and community spirit of the Hawthorne Hikers, residents at Mountain View Manor are now able to access these therapeutic experiences. Their fundraiser was not just a walk for a cause, it was a step forward in transforming long term care.
As we celebrate BC Youth Week this May, we’re inspired by the lasting impact of these young changemakers. On behalf of the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation, thank you for your generosity and dedication. You’ve truly shown that youth have the power to make a difference.
