Celebrating Recreational Therapy Month

Nurturing Wellness and Joy Through Leisure and Play at Mountain View Manor

February is Recreational Therapy Month! Recreational therapy is a systematic process that utilizes recreation and other activities as interventions to address the assessed needs of individuals as a means to psychological and physical health, recovery and well-being. The primary goal is to improve or maintain physical, mental, and emotional well-being, enhance independence, and promote an overall higher quality of life.

At Mountain View Manor, our Long Term Centre on the Delta Hospital Campus of Care the Rec Therapy team identifies the needs and interests of the residents and create a monthly calendar of programming. One activity they utilize is bowling, a great game for people of all ages. Many residents enjoy it as a familiar leisure pursuit. The Rec therapy staff also engage residents in wheelchairs, ambulatory residents, as well as others who may need an adaptive ramp to assist them with their chance at a strike. There are many benefits to bowling including maintaining flexibility, balance, hand eye coordination and it keeps seniors active and their blood circulating. Beyond physical benefits, bowling fosters crucial social engagement among residents, staff, and volunteers, creating a friendly and encouraging atmosphere. When the fun is over, residents are invited to the tables after for refreshments and a chance to socialize with others.
